Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five member’s roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short match ups in which both teams designate a jammer who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to hinder the opposing jammer while assisting their own jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously. Roller derby is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, nearly half of them outside the United States.

The primary purpose of the Heart of Texas League is to provide an opportunity for the people of Bexar County, Texas and the surrounding areas to participate, observe, and support the challenging and exciting sport of roller derby. To foster an environment of teamwork, empowerment, good sportsmanship, and community service, while building strong relationships in order to further the principles of female and youth athleticism within the community at large.
In line with our purpose, HOTS has, from its inception, created opportunities for women, men, and children to enjoy the community atmosphere, physical challenges, and genuine empowerment provided by roller derby. HOTS has endeavored to bring youth and women’s flat track roller derby to new audiences, shedding light on the thrill and pure joy that eight wheels have to offer.
